Grenaches du Monde: An Olympic edition!
In May, the international competition dedicated to the Grenache grape variety will be celebrating its 12th edition in Paris, the ‘Grenache’ and… Olympic capital!
- After its excursion to New York last year, the competition is positioning itself in one of Europe’s leading consumer and prescription markets.
- On 13 May, a panel of around a hundred international experts will pick the best Grenache wines in the lounges of the Aéro Club de France (Paris, 16º).
The great journey of Grenaches du Monde continues
After last year’s event in New York, it’s now the turn of the French capital to celebrate the world of Grenache. This return to the old continent of the great ‘globe-trotting’ Grenaches du Monde competition promises an exceptional edition, bringing together the best Grenache wines from all over the world!
In a dynamic, business-like format, Grenaches du Monde aims to attract an audience of demanding and influential professional tasters from all over the world, to discover the richness and diversity of this emblematic grape variety.
A time for sharing and conviviality, Grenaches du Monde celebrates the culture and know-how of Grenache producers at an event that has become a must in the professional calendar, highlighting all the producers and all the regions that make Grenache wines, in all their forms: red, rosé, white, sweet or sparkling.
This twelfth edition promises to be a consecration for this unique grape variety, which is winning over more and more wine-lovers and consumers around the world. It will take place in the lounges of the Aéro Club de France, a stone’s throw from the Trocadéro in Paris.
Grenaches du Monde is an annual competition open to all Grenache wines (pure or blended), regardless of colour, origin or nationality. Producers and traders wishing to submit their wines can do so online until April 15 at grenachesdumonde.com.
With 163,000 hectares of vineyards, Grenache is the seventh most planted grape variety in the world. It is the emblematic variety of the Mediterranean countries, mainly Spain and France, which together account for almost 90% of the world’s planted area. Spain, France and Italy are the three main producing countries, flying the flag for Europe, but Grenache is very popular all over the world: North and South Africa, Australia, North and South America, Croatia, Greece, Lebanon, etc
About Grenaches du Monde
Created in 2013 by the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon (CIVR) in Perpignan, Grenaches du Monde has become a travelling competition, with its first edition relocated to Aragon (Campo de Borja in 2016), then to Sardinia (2017) and Catalonia (Terra Alta, 2018). The Competition returned to Perpignan in 2019, and the following year set off again for Montpellier in partnership with Vins de Pays d’Oc, the world’s leading producer of rosé Grenache wines. In 2021, the Competition split into 4 tastings in 4 Grenache capitals: Cebreros in Spain, Châteauneuf du Pape and Perpignan in France, and Ascoli Piceno in Italy. In 2022, the competition visited Navarre before taking on the challenge of a first edition outside the European continent, in New York in June 2023. The jury, made up of 80 professionals (all North American for the first time: distributors, sommeliers, importers, journalists and influencers) assessed more than 800 wines from 4 different countries (France, Spain, Italy and the United States) and awarded 286 medals (Double Gold, Gold and Silver).
